PROFESSIONAL

Newswire
Newswire (http://newswire.com.au) was a widely read, high quality IT news Web site operated by Australian Consolidated Press (ACP) from 1997 to 2001.
I was on contract as Senior Journalist, writing daily news, features and a weekly opinion column.
In late 2000, parent company Publishing & Broadcasting Ltd (PBL) cut back Newswire to reduce its online costs, even though readership and advertising revenue were high by Web standards.
Two ACP Tech editors lost their jobs after publicly questioning this move, but the site was eventually taken offline in July 2001.
I managed to salvage some of my work from the database and it is presented here in raw form to support my resume.
'Vandore'
Popular weekly opinion column published on Newswire throughout 2000
Reader feedback on 'Vandore'.
News stories
My reporting for Newswire took me to the National Press Club, the United States, south-east Asia, and around the Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane IT circuit. The selection of stories here is a bit boring, but at least it demonstrates my newswriting!
News features
On Wednesdays I took one topic from the news and wrote an in-depth news feature.
5 Minute Guides
Every Monday I produced a Q&A guide to one technology topic appearing in the news.
TRAVEL
A cycle tour of Scotland (1996)
Living in a bedsit in Glasgow, I needed to explain my journey. This travelogue has since become a reference for anyone planning to travel Scotland by bicycle... I receive several emails a month, so here's a feedback file!
REAL WRITING
Ulpanyali (1991)
Written on a volunteer workcamp on Ulpanyali outstation near King's Canyon in Central Australia.
