Introduction
The new Internet industry body charged with introducing
competition to Australian domain name registration has chosen a
CEO.
Body
The new boss of .au Domain Administration (auDA) is Joseph
O'Reilly, previously the high-profile executive director of
Liberty Victoria, also known as the Victorian Council for Civil
Liberties. His job will be to establish a policy framework for
registration of all .au domain names, and introducing competition
for Melbourne IT, which currently has a monopoly on the .com.au
sub-domain. New domain registration companies are expected to
take over from Internet pioneers Robert Elz and Geoff Huston, who
are still responsible for domain name registration in
non-commercial categories in Australia.
"It's now time to build on their efforts to ensure that the
important work of domain name registration is appropriately
resourced and regulated," O'Reilly said. "It is
imperative that we establish a framework for self-regulation, not
only so that industry has some certainty about the way forward,
but also so that appropriate customer service standards can be
set for end users."
At the same time, auDA will form a dispute resolution system for
situations where two or more organisations lay claim to the same
domain.
A better framework for administering Australian domain names
would improve representation for Australians in negotiations with
the controversial Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and
Numbers (ICANN) and regional bodies, O'Reilly said.
O'Reilly is also the immediate past president of the Victorian
AIDS Council and chairperson of the National Public Health
Partnership Advisory Group. His expertise lies in public policy
development and public consultation, rather than technology.
