Introduction
Two big names in conservative politics today announced
directorships with emerging Internet companies.
Body
Former deputy prime minister Tim Fischer will join his National
Party leadership predecessor Charles Blunt as a director of
Australian Business Technologies (ABT), which aims to provide
high-bandwidth Internet services to regional Australia. Blunt has
been announced as the new chairperson of ABT.
ABT recently made headlines when Maxis (formerly known as Capital
Energy, an oil and gas company) announced it would buy the
15-year-old company for $70 million (see story). The investment
is still subject to the approval of Maxis shareholders at a
general meeting to be scheduled shortly. Blunt, Fischer and other
ABT executives are expected to join the Maxis board. ABT's rural
bandwidth services are provided through its subsidiary Heartland
Communications.
Fischer is still a sitting federal MP and must announce his
directorship to the registrar of members' interests. However, 10
days ago he announced his intention to give up his seat of Farrer
at the next federal election. He described the ABT directorship
as 'yet another hat' to wear, but said he would carefully limit
his total number of 'hats'.
Meanwhile, ex-NSW premier Nick Greiner resigned from the Coles
Myer board this morning following rumours that he was in
negotiations with online retailer dstore to become its
chairperson. This appointment has been confirmed by dstore and
Greiner will discuss his move 'from retailing to etailing' at a
press conference in Melbourne this afternoon.
A joint venture between LookSmart Australia and companies such as
Rebel Sport and the Sussan chain of clothing shops, dstore was
launched late last year as an online department store. It will
eventually offer groceries and other items in competition with
retail giants such as Coles Myer and Woolworths.
